Vuity is a prescription eye drop that temporarily improves near vision for some patients. It decreases pupil diameter, increasing clear vision range at close distances.
Does Vuity work?
In trials, Vuity was most useful for patients 40-55 years old who normally wear +2.00 readers or weaker when reading.
Does Vuity have any side effects?
Some patients get a mild headache with Vuity use. Another common side effect is eye redness.
It is also important to remember that Vuity should be used once a day only in the morning because small pupils cause reduced night vision.
How long does improved near vision with Vuity last?
Vuity improves near vision for 4-6 hours.
Can contact lens wearers use Vuity?
Contact lens wearers can use Vuity. They should wait 10-15 minutes before putting contact lenses in after using Vuity in the morning.
Can anyone use Vuity?
Vuity will not be prescribed to patients at risk of having a history of a retinal tear, hole or detachment. Although there were no documented retinal detachments during FDA trials of Vuity, pilocarpine (the active ingredient in Vuity) can increase the risk of retinal detachment.
If a patient has a history of iritis, uveitis or an autoimmune disease, such as Lupus or Rheumatoid arthritis, they should not use Vuity.
Patients with a condition called lens pseudo-exfoliation are also not candidates for Vuity.
We will not prescribe Vuity for children or patients who are pregnant or nursing.
How do I get a prescription for Vuity?
A patient should have an eye examination with a retinal evaluation within a year before scheduling an office visit to discuss and test Vuity. If a patient achieves significant near vision benefit with little to no side effects, we will prescribe Vuity for three months. After three months of Vuity use, the patient will return to the Patterson Eye Clinic for a retinal evaluation, vision assessment and a year prescription.
How much does Vuity cost?
Vuity and office visits related to safely prescribing Vuity are NOT covered by Vision benefits or medical insurance. A 2.5 ml bottle of Vuity costs approximately $85. The two office visits are $120 each.
Are there other drops available that will help me read?
Several new drops in FDA trials may be available in the future to improve reading vision.
