Dry eye disease is a chronic condition that can interfere with daily comfort and clear vision. This condition is most commonly caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), accounting for about 86% of cases.
We proudly offer OptiLight by Lumenis, the first and only FDA-approved IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment for dry eye management due to MGD. Safe, non-invasive, and clinically proven, OptiLight targets inflammation and restores balance to your tear film.
OptiLight uses Optimal Pulse Technology™ (OPT™), a patented energy delivery system, designed to safely and precisely treat the delicate skin below the eyes. It helps manage dry eye caused by MGD by:
Reducing inflammation
Eliminating abnormal blood vessels
Reducing Demodex mites and bacteria
Improving meibomian gland function
Increasing tear break-up time and stabilizing the tear film
OptiLight can be combined with other in-office treatments including thermal gland expression, and clinical lid cleansing, and home therapies such as warm compresses, lid scrubs or cleansers, and artificial tears for optimal results.
Treatment Preparation:
Avoid extended sun exposure 4 weeks before treatment, including tanning beds and sunless self-tanning products
Discontinue any products containing retinol, glycolic acid, topical vitamin C, and benzoyl peroxide for one week before treatment
Avoid facial injectables for 2-6 weeks before treatment (i.e. botox, filler, sculptra, etc.)
Treatment Protocol:
The OptiLight treatment course includes 4 sessions, spaced 2–4 weeks apart
Each session takes 45-60 minutes with only about 10–15 minutes of energy delivery time
Treatments begin with a cool-water cleansing of the face
Your eyes will be protected with shields and a cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area
Light is gently pulsed onto the cheeks, face, and skin below your eyes
Treatments finish with the application of post-procedure skincare, including sunscreen
How It Feels:
You may feel warmth or tapping during treatment. Most patients report minimal discomfort and no pain.
When You’ll See Results:
Patients typically notice improvement after 2–3 sessions, with optimal relief after all 4. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 3–12 months.
After Treatment & Recovery:
You may have some temporary redness in the treatment area that usually fades within a few hours
Most patients can resume daily activities and apply makeup immediately
Avoid direct sunlight and wear sunscreen daily for four weeks after each session
Your eyes may feel slightly dry or gritty for a few days after treatments due to the evacuation of thickened oil. Preservative-free artificial tears can help during this time.
